چکیده

Antarctic polar descent and planetary wave activity in the upper stratosphere and lower mesosphere are observed in ISAMS CO data from April to July 1992. COderived mean April-to-May upper stratosphere descent rates of 15 K/day (0.25 km/day) at 60S and 20 K/day (0.33 km/day) at 80S are compared with descent rates from diabatic trajectory analyses. At 60S there is excellent agreement, while at 80S the trajectory-derived descent is significantly larger in early April. Zonal wavenumber 1 enhancement of CO is observed on 9 and 28 May, coincident with enhanced wave 1 in UKMO geopotential height. The 9 May event extends from 40 to 70 km and shows westward phase tilt with height, while the 28 May event extends from 40 to 50 km and shows virtually no phase tilt with height.

Planetary wave activity in the polar lower stratosphere

Temperature data from the COSMIC GPS-RO satellite constellation are used to study the distribution and variability of planetary wave activity in the low to midstratosphere (15–40 km) of the Arctic and Antarctic from September 2006 until March 2009. Stationary waves are separated from travelling waves and their amplitudes, periods and small-scale vertical distribution then examined. COSMIC obser...

Observation and simulation of wave breaking in the southern hemispheric stratosphere during VORCORE

An interesting occurrence of a Rossby wave breaking event observed during the VORCORE experiment is presented and explained. Twenty-seven balloons were launched inside the Antarctic polar vortex. Almost all of these balloons evolved in the stratosphere around 500K within the vortex, except the one launched on 28 October 2005. In this case, the balloon was caught within a tongue of high potentia...

Quasi-biennial oscillation influence on long-period planetary waves in the Antarctic upper mesosphere

[1] Long-period planetary wave data derived from meteor wind observations recorded over a 12-year period with the SuperDARN radar at Halley, Antarctica, are presented and compared with the phase of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) throughout the equatorial stratosphere. Enhanced planetary wave activity in the Antarctic upper mesosphere is found during the summer months, when the QBO in the ...

High-Frequency Planetary Waves in the Polar Middle Atmosphere as Seen in a Data Assimilation System

The 4-day wave often dominates the large-scale wind, temperature, and constituent variability in the highlatitude Southern Hemisphere winter near the stratopause. This study examines the winter Southern Hemisphere vortex of 1998 using 4-times-daily output from a data assimilation system to focus on the polar 2-day, wavenumber-2 component of the 4-day wave. The data assimilation system products ...

Interannual and Decadal Variations of Planetary Wave Activity, Stratospheric Cooling, and Northern Hemisphere Annular Mode

Using NCEP–NCAR 51-yr reanalysis data, the interannual and decadal variations of planetary wave activity and its relationship to stratospheric cooling, and the Northern Hemisphere Annular mode (NAM), are studied. It is found that winter stratospheric polar temperature is highly correlated on a year-to-year basis with the Eliassen–Palm (E–P) wave flux from the troposphere, implying a dynamical c...
